Hallucinations in Clinical Psychiatry: A Guide for Mental Health Professionals

This book is aimed at clinicians and is intended as a guide to evaluating, diagnosing, and treating hallucinatory symptoms. It begins with a brief history of hallucinations, followed by chapters on their phenomenology and on hallucinations as delusions and illusions. Also dealt with are the etiology and psychopathology of hallucinations and REM sleep, hallucinations, and dreams. There are several chapters devoted to specific types of hallucinations or hallucinations associated with specific contexts: psychiatric disorders, alcoholism, organic mental disorders, hallucinogens, pharmacological agents, ear and eye diseases, children, hypnosis, suggestion, dissociative states, and nonmorbid conditions. It closes with three general chapters on diagnostic considerations, treatment, and a proposed integrative theory of hallucinations.
