The After-Life: Under the Scrutiny of ScienceHardy, Christine
The question as to whether or not it is possible to survive bodily death cannot be adequately addressed through any single approach. A scientific resolution of this issue, if at all possible, depends upon data deriving from a wide range of disciplines. This book thus constitutes a survey of diverse domains of psychical and parapsychological research that may bear upon the question of post-mortem survival. The book examines investigations of near-death experiences (NDEs), out-of-body experiences (OBEs), hauntings and apparitions, poltergeists, mediumistic communications, and apparent reincarnation cases. It also details efforts to detect "bioenergies" and the "Theta aspect" (survival of death) and to thus explore the scientific basis of concepts such as the "aura" or the "astral body." For each domain, the author describes the methods utilized by researchers (investigations of spontaneous cases, field studies, or laboratory research), reviews the general findings, and describes models that have been proposed to account for the phenomena observed. The book concludes with a global review of diverse survivalist theories as opposed to "super-psi" interpretations of the data.
