Evidence of Life After Death: A Casebook for the Tough-Minded

Berger, Arthur S.

This is a casebook of experiences, mediumistic and other, that indicate that some component of human being survives biological death. Berger has culled the parapsychological literature of the past 100 years to choose 15 cases and has added 15 more investigated by the Survival Research Foundation, which he directs. A lawyer by training, Berger follows the judicial practice of representing both sides of a situation. Thus, each case is followed by presenting both pro and con views in order to "stimulate discussion of points, raise questions, [and] bring out the real points in controversy" (p. viii). There are four chapters. The first presents seven cases illustrating "Mental Phenomena" (apparitions and ESP). Chapter 2, "Mental Mediumship," considers 13 cases of communications received through a medium and purporting to come from deceased persons. Chapter 3 contains 10 cases of "Physical Phenomena," which may or may not occur when a medium is present. In Chapter 4, Berger discusses "Evidence and Proof" in regard to both mental and physical phenomena.
