Beyond the Body: An Investigation of Out-of-the-Body ExperienceBlackmore, Susan J.
This is a detailed and probing survey of out-of-body experiences and related questions. Psychologist Blackmore devotes a chapter to defining the OBE. Several chapters are about OBE explorers such as S. Muldoon, O. Fox, Yram, J.H.M. Whiteman, R. Monroe, etc. She also deals with collections of OBEs, the OBE in other cultures, and surveys of OBEs. Methods of inducing OBEs are described, as are subjects related to OBEs such as lucid dreams, deathbed visions, near-death experiences, the double in psychopathology, imagery and hallucinations, extrasensory perception in OBEs, OB experiments, and attempts to detect the soul. In conclusion, Blackmore reassesses theories of OBEs and offers her own "psychological approach to the OBE." This book is especially important because of the questions it asks and the way in which it sets about answering them.
