Anthropologist Long organized the well received interdisciplinary symposium on parapsychology and anthropology at the 1974 annual meeting of the American Anthropological Association. In this work he extends this interdisciplinary approach, bringing together expanded papers from that symposium plus additional contributions by anthropologists, parapsychologists, and other scientists. Long provides introductory and coordinating remarks for each chapter which help to tie the book together. The book is aimed at anthropologists as well as any "who wish to better understand psi in relation to culture and social life" (p. 390). Part I, "Parapsychology and Anthropology," has four papers, by Long, Agehananda Buharati, Jule Eisenbud, and Margaret Mead. Part II, "The Physical Bases for Paranormal Events," consists of papers by Evan Harris Walker and James B. Beal. Part III, "Psi, Cognition, and , Communication," contains papers by Walter Griest, Alexander Randall, and Henry Reed. Part V, "The Origins of Psi," consists of three chapters, by Berthold E. Schwarz, William S. Lyon, and Long. The fifth part is entitled "Paranormal Dimensions in Primitive Medicine," and consists of three contributions, two by Long and one by Robert W. and Linda K. Sussman. Part VI, "Some Practical Uses of ESP: Psi and Archeological Reconstructions," has three papers, by J.N. Emerson, Zbigniew W.Wolkowski, and Jeffrey D. Goodman. The final part is "Parapsychology and Anthropology: An Overview," and contains three chapters by Roger W. Wescott, Charles Muses. |
