A Collection of Near-Death Research ReadingsLundahl, Craig R.
This is a collection of essays dealing with scientific explorations of the subjective experiences of persons near to physical death. Lundahl, a sociologist, calls the scientific study of NDES "circumthanatology." The purpose of the book is to disseminate information on near-death research, to encourage further teaching and research in this area, and "to contribute to the reevaluation of our society's orientation toward death and the dying" (p. xii). Three criteria were used to select material for inclusion: that they deal with NDES or deathbed observations or have particular relevance for the scientific study of NDES; that they be recent; and that they be scientifically oriented. It is in five parts: (1) Science and Near-Death Experiences (Widdison); (2) The History of Near-Death Experiences (Audette); (3) Recent Research on Near-Death Experiences (Macmillan and Brown; Noyes and Kletti; Osis and Haraldsson; Moody; Ring; Sabom and Kreutziger; Garfield; Lundahl; Ring and Franklin); (4) Explanations for NDEs (Grosso); and (5) Directions in Near-Death Research (Lundahl). Five of the 13 selections were written specifically for this volume (Widdison, Audette, Ring, Sabom and Kreutziger, and Grosso).
