Research in Parapsychology 1990: Abstracts and Papers from the Thirty-Third Annual Convention of the Parapsychological Association, 1990Henkel, Linda A., & Schmeidler, Gertrude R. (Eds.) | |
Eight paper sessions are reported: four under Innovative Procedures, three under Innovative Use of Statistics (including Dean Radin’s on sequential analysis), two meta-analyses (one on extraversion and ESP and one on PK with dice), four on Ganzfeld research, two on Brain Responses and ESP, four on Displacement Effects, two under Historical Analysis, and three on Opinions About Parapsychology, including "Exploring the Dyadic Psychic Counseling Interaction," a methodological paper by Douglas G. Richards, which might better have been placed under Innovative Procedures. There was one symposium, on International Communication and Collaboration in Parapsychology (Delanoy and Varvoglis), and two panel discussions. One, Shall We Give Up the Ghost?, consisted of "The Study of Ghosts: A Brief Synopsis," by Michaeleen Maher, "Haunting Apparitions: Case Collection Studies Published Since the 1880s," by Carlos S. Alvarado, "Demons, Ets, Bigfoot, and Elvis: A Fortean View of Ghosts" by George P. Hanson, which relates spontaneous psychic phenomena to a number of other exceptional human experiences; Exorcising Ghosts, by W.G. Roll, which proposes that "psychic, ESP, PK, precognition. ... take place within the psyche, not between the psyche and something else. The idea that psychic occurrences are paranormal results from the assumption that the self is separate from others and from the physical environment. If this assumption is set aside, psychic experiences at once become normal expressions of human personality" (pp. 142-143). Gertrude R. Schmeidler contributed "How to Go in Opposite Directions at Once," in which she proposes that ghostly phenomena be approached from two angles: critical analysis and attempts to make successful predictions. The other panel was on Children and Psi, and contains six contributions by Sally Ann Drucker, Athena A. Drewes, H. Kanthamani, James G. Matlock, Stanley Krippner, and Raymond Lee. There were four poster sessions, by Lester Lomax, Miguel Roig, Zoltan Vassy, and Erlendur Haraldsson and Joop Houtkooper. Two abbreviated invited addresses are included: "The Enemies of Parapsychology" by Robert A. McConnell and "Is Psi a Subcognitive Process?" by Gertrude R. Schmeidler. The presidential address by K. Ramakrishna Rao, "Heretical Psychology: On the Scope and Substance of Psychical Research," calls for parapsychology to stop following in psychology’s behavioristic tradition and become a heretical psychology, which would pioneer a "true science of consciousness, that is, the study of consciousness qua consciousness" (p. 183), with special attention to attention. The last part is on meditation and attention, and he suggests that meditation is "deployment of attention" (p. 189). | |
