Survey of the "phantom hitch-hiker" phenomenon in all its stages. Stories of "road ghosts" extend back to antiquity—it is an archetypal motif that is part of the tradition of folklore and literature. Goss, a freelance writer specializing in the paranormal, describes all the variants of the ghostly hitch-hiker theme. In addition to classifying the phenomenon, emphasis is placed on finding normal explanations for it, whether they be instances of mistaken identity or outright lies.
