Flight of Mind: A Psychological Study of the Out-of-Body Experience Irwin, H.J.
The main objective of this book is to encourage and facilitate research by providing a comprehensive survey of the empirical literature and examining the aspects of OBE amenable to scientific research. Irwin systematically reviews the phenomenology of OBEs, the circumstances under which OBEs occur, the characteristics of persons who have OBES, methods of OBE research, and the principal theories offered to explain OBEs. The book also serves as a report of Irwin's empirical studies of the OBE, several published here for the first time. Irwin interprets the OBE as essentially an imaginal experience. Thus, the theory presented is primarily psychological. However, it provides for the integral operation of psi processes in the OBE as well. The book is aimed at psychologists as well as para-psychologists, in line with the author's view that "parapsychological phenomena form a legitimate and fruitful subject of study with their natural context of behavioral science."
