The Roots of Consciousness: Psychic Liberation Through History, Science and Experience

Mishlove, Jeffrey

The core ideas on which this survey of consciousness exploration is based are that (1) psychic, mystical, and occult phenomena "are not paranormal, and therefore unreal or insignificant; . . . they are rooted in the essential core of our cosmic existence, in our cultural history, in our scientific knowledge, and in our social institutions" (p. xxix); and (2) the exploration of consciousness "involves intense personal commitment as well as objective understanding" (p. xxix). Section I covers historical explorations of consciousness: Prehistoric, Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Indian, Chinese, Greek, Roman, Judeo-Christian, alchemical, Arabic, medieval, Renaissance, eighteenth century, and nineteenth century to the SPR and William James. Section II surveys "Scientific Approaches to Consciousness," starting with ESP research from J.B. Rhine to PMIR; OBEs; psychic healing; firewalkers; PK; life and death; other worlds; physiological mechanisms; and rhythms. The last section reviews theories, practical applications of psi, and organizations. The material in this book was prepared in partial fulfillment of Mishlove's examination requirements for his doctoral program in parapsychology at the University of California, Berkeley.
