The Mediumship of the Tape Recorder Ellis, D[avid] J.
This is an account of "a detailed examination of the (Jurgenson, Raudive) phenomenon of voice extras on tape recordings" undertaken while Ellis was the Perrott-Warrick Student in Psychical Research at Trinity College, Cambridge, 1970-1972. He describes and discusses all the research on tape-recorded voices as well as his own experiments. Although he began the study with the conviction that something paranormal was occurring, his investigation led him to conclude that there is "no reason to postulate anything but natural causes . . . to explain the `voice phenomenon.'" However, he suggests that use of the tape recorder can serve as a medium for ESP: the listener can turn out to be "more psychic than his apparatus." Ellis's informed account is essential reading for anyone interested in the "voice phenomenon."
