The Geller Papers: Scientific Observations on the Paranormal Powers of Uri GellerPanati, Charles (Ed.).
Whereas Ebon's The Amazing Uri Geller is a collection of the popular writings on Geller, this book is a compilation of scholarly reports on Geller's phenomena. As Panati describes it: "The purpose of this book is to present firsthand observations on the talents of Uri Geller and, in doing so, to bring to light and offer for public scrutiny much material that has either never before appeared in print or has surfaced only piecemeal in the popular press. The book is written—through papers, reports, diary entries, and letters—by the scientists and professionals who, is various ways, have scrutinized Geller's talents" (p. vii). Physicists, mathematicians, and engineers contributed 14 of the papers, and there are three by parapsychologists, four by magicians (but not the better known magician critics of Geller such as Christopher and Randi), and one by a professional photographer. In a 29-page introduction, Panati, a physics-trained Newsweek science editor, reviews and evaluates, for the layperson, the major highlights of the research reported in the remainder of the book. Although this collection could be said to represent the best "scientific" work with Geller, it was severely criticized by Hyman (see review in Zetetic under its present title of Skeptical Inquirer). Those disposed to take Geller seriously should read Hyman's review.
