Apparitions Green, Celia, & McCreery, Charles
Celia Green is Director and Charles McCreery is Research officer of the Institute of Psychophysical Research in Oxford, England. In 1968 and 1974 the Institute made newspaper and radio appeals "for first-hand accounts of experiences of perceiving apparitions, this term being intended to cover experiences involving any of the senses and not just visual ones" (p. viii). A total of 1,800 persons responded and were sent a questionnaire, 850 of which were completed. This book is based on the experiential accounts, questionnaire answers, and previously published firsthand accounts of apparitions. The authors classify and analyze the characteristics of the apparitions, and individually describe many cases. One such classification is autophany, in which a person sees an apparition of himself, as opposed to autoscopy, in which a person apparently sees his own body as if from outside it. Apparitions of animals and objects are also included.
