Landscapes of the Night: How and Why We Dream

Evans, Christopher

British psychologist Christopher Evans died before this book was finished. It was completed by Peter Evans, a British science journalist. It is in four parts: The first is on traditional theories of sleep and dreams; the second is on sleep deprivation and the REM technique. Part 3 presents the computer theory of dreaming in detail, and the last part is on the "quest for inner space." It deals with dreams and creativity and learning in dreams. There are three chapters dealing primarily with psychical theories of dreams. The authors point out that although psychical theories of dreams are widely held, they are in need of substantial evidential support. The second chapter is on seemingly veridical telepathic and precognitive dreams, and it is concluded that anecdotal cases are very weak as evidence. The third is about the experimental approach to studying psi in general and the laboratory studies of dream ESP in particular. The Maimonides experiments in dream telepathy are described, and it is concluded that it has not been established that nonchance factors were operating.
