The Divining Hand: The 500-Year-Old Mystery of Dowsing

Bird, Christopher

This well researched and illustrated (with photographs as well as drawings) survey of the lore of dowsing by author/journalist Bird centers on the hypothesis that "faith may be the true substance of dowsing"—"the ultimate mysterious `force' that moves the dowsing rod at the appropriate moment" (p. 15). In addition to historical material, interviews with living dowsers are included. Scientific and engineering aspects of dowsing—other than for water—are described, and the book closes with a theoretical section.
