The Spiritual Nature of Man: A Study of Contemporary Religious ExperienceHardy, Alister
This book presents the research carried out during the first eight years of the Religious Experience Research Unit at Oxford founded by biologist Hardy. (Since his death it has become the Alister Hardy Research Centre.) Basically, it gives the results of the analysis of the first 3,000 replies to a survey of religious experience conducted by the unit. The experiences have been classified into 92 categories primarily describing the varieties of spiritual awareness. Many examples are given in the recipient's own words. Dynamic patterns, triggers, and consequences of the experiences are also discussed. Several investigations based on the records are described as well as additional quantitative research conducted by D. Hay and A. Morist.
