The Meeting of Science and Spirit: Guidelines for a New AgeWhite, John
In this work consciousness research educator John White brings together his writings published in various magazines and journals primarily in the 1980s. He sees them as forming an organic whole whose deep structure consists of humanity’s response to the call of science and Spirit, as expressed in various EHEs such as "visions, dreams, imagination, and inspired moments of discovery and creativity" (p. xiii). He sees science and spirit as complementary, not in conflict. He feels the survival of the world depends on healing the division between them. In line with this, he sees matter and spirit as complementary, not opposed. The aim of the book is "to assist spirit in the feedback process by which humanity assumes its divine birthright" (p. xiv). A subtheme is the New Age. Chapters are devoted to various aspects of it and in each case he tries to point out what is true and false and to show now what is dangerous and useful about them. The basic theme of all chapters is that "self-realization is God-realization" (p. xiv). The selections are arranged in two parts: the first is "Science—The Ascent of Humanity," and contains 13 essays. The second, "Spirit—the Descent of the Divine," consists of 11 selections. It seems to me a third section is called, for "The rise of the divine" in which the sacred is seen as present in what formerly was considered to be "lower aspects," such as the body, child-rearing, daily life activities, nature, and the Earth itself. In an Afterword he describes more fully than before the impetus behind his coining the term Homo noeticus.
