The Dove in the Stone: Finding the Sacred in the CommonplaceHowell, Alice O.
A Jungian and an astrologer, Howell writes about the feminine face of God, or Sophia. This book is also her spiritual autobiography. By following her dreams, visions, and other EHEs, she identified her inner guide as Sophia. As a child who had been in 36 countries by age 12, she sought comfort in an inner "Pure Land," which was steady and very real. But when she saw pictures of and read of Iona, it seemed to be the very same place. On pilgrimage there, "the inner landscape suffused the outer, or the outer embodied the inner" (p. 8). She imparts her message via an account of another pilgrimage to Iona she made with her husband. Various archetypes associated with Sophia are presented via their dialogue as they visit places on the island. Because Sophia is the mother-of-God this book is embued with the spirit of the goddess who is all things, and it sets forth the way of the heart, and of wisdom, which is available to all, through the inner guide, and which comes to us in the form of revelations, or exceptional human experiences. But what we are led to is the direct knowledge that everything is sacred, the commonplace as well as the special moments of grace.
